Industrial Designer / Design Engineer

Full time (Dorset / London)

A chance to play a major role in shaping the future of a British Heritage brand.  A multi faceted role involved in all aspects of product, from concept to shelf. You will work in a small internal team with external consultants to design and develop new products and product upgrades.


Are a bright, flexible, hard working graduate with at least 4 years experience in industry wanting to move to the next stage of your career. You have a proactive commercial attitude and are a confident self starter. You have experience designing and developing commercial products as part of a small team. You have a degree in product design, industrial design or engineering and good computer skills, ideally solid works. 

The Job

Working with the internal team and external design and technical consultants you will design and developing new products for the Mathmos range. You will be particularly involved in integrating new technologies into Mathmos' lava lamp range.

As well as design you will be involved in project management, quality standards, budgets, component and manufacturer sourcing and management, technical standards etc. All aspects of bringing high quality, exciting products from concept to reality.


We are a long established company well known company for our invention of the lava lamp. We are a small team based in a factory in Poole, Dorset. Some of us work remotely. Our factory is two minutes work from Holton Heath station on the London to Weymouth line, we also have parking on site. Whilst it will be essential to be in the factory for several days a week some remote working is possible.

Mathmos Design Internships - full or part time

Based in our Poole factory Mathmos offer unpaid placements providing fantastic hands on experience seeing products through from concept to sale.

You Need;

  • To have finished or be part way through a relevant design degree.

  • To live within a one hour commute of our factory: BH16 6LG. (We will pay either a petrol allowance or train fair (our factory is next to Holton Heath train station and has parking) plus lunch.

  • To be able to commit to a minimum of 4 months either full time or 3 days a week. (Please ensure you can afford to take an unpaid role before applying.)

  • A personable and willing attitude.

  • Solid Works and Adobe Suite are an advantage.

You will Receive Hands on Experience in the following areas;

  • Product design and development

  • Packaging Design

  • Product sourcing, supplier management

  • Setting AQLs and managing product quality

  • Exhibition design and execution
